I’m watching my childhood neighborhood burn from nearly 3000 miles away. This is what happens when we pull funding from firefighters so that we can give more riot gear to cops.
The house I lived in for the first nine years of my life is currently in the mandatory evacuation zone for the Sunset fire. I have family friends who are just across the freeway from the Eaton fire evacuation zone. Hopefully the freeway acts as a fire break for them.
I am reminded of a windy night in my youth. I was probably 6 or 7. My family was living in a place in the Hollywood Hills. There was an empty lot next door, overgrown with native tallgrass. The wind had blown two power lines together and the old cracked insulation had allowed enough arcing to melt the two together. The added stress caused them to fall into the empty lot. So now these power lines, melted together and arcing, are writhing around in 3 foot tall grass on a steep hillside. Thankfully the FD showed up once they figured out how to negotiate the switchbacks in their trucks.
